Put a ring on it

The name Rotterdam means the dam of river Rotte. This stream of water is the heart of Rotterdam which is being ignored by the residents as automobile transportation became everyday mode of commuting. In order to bring life back to the river Rotte, it needs a new identity and the singels and boezems surrounding it will help Rotte getting a new identity. This project is called Put a ring on it and it is about linking the existing water and green systems of Rotterdam.

River system of Netherands

The country Netherlands is known to everyone as the land below sea. Since the sea level is higher than the land, water became an element of danger for Dutch people. Water had to be drained and let off to the rivers and sea as quick as possible as the danger of flooding is far too dangerous and so during the industrial age, where Rotterdam we know today got its identity, river Rotte was canaled. Which made the water dirty and quicken the flow. However, thanks to the technology of 21st century, this can all change. The water can flow at slower rate and can become a place for life by using the Boezems and Singels as draining water.

Bringing the surrounding identity together

By connecting the water streams together, an island can be crated giving one united identity to the neighbourhood and as a hub bringing the Urban, Polder and Forest surrounding elements in and out. To the south, Rotterdam Central stands, where heavy urban buildings and dense population lives. To the north, quieter suburban atmosphere lies. To the east, the Kralingse Bos with huge amount of green element bringing all the natural beauty together. There is one element tying all three atmosphere together, the water element. Singel and Boezems are connected with Rotte as well as the zones giving perfect opportunity to connect the three zones as well as giving identity to that island.

Water effected green/urban open space

Another composition of elements is connected with the water element and these are green and urban squares. These are the lands that can act as water storage during heavy rainfall or an opportunity to clean the quality of water that gets pumped out to the sea every day. The radius of 400m are drawn in order to collect as much grey water as possible. By creating a system of water circulation, water is not a threat for Rotterdam anymore, instead, becomes a quality that Rotterdam has for her residents and visitors.

Put a Ring on It Section

Urban/Green section of the circular park

It is not only about connecting the water system together in master planning scheme, but each sectors of the water contains certain spatial atmosphere giving sub identity making the circular park more diverse and character. Trees are planted differently according to the locations; the physical activity differs according to the types of people living in the area. There are numerous sub benefits this circular park brings besides just local leisure park.
