Pocket Garden
Hiding and Seeking the Sensation
Creating a system from excavating to depletion is important as it gives a chance for that nature to become something more than abandoned industrial site and become a beautiful park for the residents and also can become attraction points for the visitors.
Pocket Garden uses this new system of mining design technique to create an enclosed garden an villa for the forest keeper.
Future mining timeframe
The system of mining is designed so that nothing is wasted from the quarry. Everything excavated is reused as design feature that allows widening and funnelling of vision to occur. From the soil extracts to digging of water features are done in a way that limestone that the mining company desires are extracted for sale and leaving natural features for the landscape designers to apply their ideal garden.
Widening and narrowing
By varying the planting style from dense to widening gives emphasises on these hidden locations that are all directed and designed by the landscape architect but still seems adventurous for the visitors.
Pocket Garden
Section showing level change
The Pocket Garden is hidden away from the main quarry site, allowing it to be an oasis for the visitors and becoming final destination point where they do not have to worry about way finding, giving an end point for their journey through the entire quarry park.
The garden is divided into three sections, water, forest and meadow space. The first thing attracting visitors are the villa an oak tree standing on top of the quarry. In order to reach these spots audiences need to climb up the green hill where they have the best view of the entire garden from the viewing platform.
Villa design
The villa is designed so that private space and public restaurant is mixed together giving a chance for the forest keeper to interact with the visitors where at the same time have private space for daily life. Small section of orchard is designed for recreational purpose.
Acer carpet
The green hill allows the acer trees to be seen as green carpet from the rooftop of the villa. During autumn, these trees become colourful carpet with yellow and red leaves, giving sublime view from the platform. All these are hiden away from the outside and this gives identity to this hidden park.
Compesition of design elements within Pocket Garden
The visual composition of narrow and widening is also used in the secret garden design where views are blocked in certain area to show the destination objectives and the view from these objectives are widen to portray the overall view of the park.
