Fate amenable to change
Bells beach carpark redevelopment
"Fate amenable to change" is a design studio project to develop the 'Alternative Design Field' through the unintended process of model making.
Image: Bubble diagram as the design field
Location: Bellsbeach carpark, Great Ocean Road, Victoria
Key words: Subtraction, Contour, Erosion, Storm water
Outcome: Flow carpark
Technique: Melting, Overlay, Superposition
Subtraction model: unintended process
The same thickness of foam core was layered as a base form and Super glue was dropped on the top. When the super glue melted to the polystyrene foam core, it created Dots and Bubbles. The form of them could define the edge of each core layer. Entire process of melting was out of control, but the form of Bubbles followed several rule. First, Bubbles cannot cross over to different layer. Second, the outcome of melting effected from the flow of glue. With this characteristic of model, translate the languages of model to create design field.
Bubble structure = maximum space between contour
Layered foam core = contour
Design process: Overlapping drawing
Flow car park: master plan
Flow car park has designed to solve the natural erosion process of Bells beach topography. The initial idea of ‘Flow car park’ is that changing the direction of stormwater runoff and reducing the speed of runoff with pond runoff system. Storm water will runoff pass through major and minor ponds, rain water garden and road topography, then it reduced speed when it flow different surface or ponds and change the direction toward creek rather than flow to beach area directly. there is artificial topography work for control the stormwater have to pass several ponds. Furthermore, a whole road network is designed via this topography change. The circulation of car or people is looks like the flow of water. This design work will be answer the question of how to solve the problem of erosion.
