Maribor 2112AI: City in extremis

Cell city projects a future sustainable urban plan with Future [2112] scenario of Maribor, Slovenia. The design proposal suggests the walkable city plan instead of using automobile.

Cell city: city is dying

Proposal for Maribor 2112 is a manifestation of a conceptual process which derives its form from a walkability standard of 400m in implementing intersecting pathways connecting the city on a small and large scale. The result of these intersections acting with the existing form is efficient use of space and a better quality of living. In considering three main drivers; the environment, population and connectivity we have been able to generate an integrated system which is dependent on both horizontal and diagonal movement within the city using a form stimulated through voronoi.

Implementing voronois has allowed connections around the city whilst providing a distribution of higher density development across the city and recognising the need to preserve Maribor’s agricultural and industry sectors with their presence influencing and becoming part of the form of the city.

Cell city: transport

Transport system

In directly linking various types of use across different spaces, increases the permeability through the city while creating a localised network which shortens travel time and reduces the carbon footprint. Additionally linking public and pedestrian orientated transport systems enables a link between different modes of travel, increasing flexibility and choice. The localised network of uses that are strongly held together by intersecting public spaces operate to facilitate movement within the activity nodes to relieve existing pressure on the city centre. As the city centre links up to the wider urban context, the community is never separated from the city context but operate simultaneously with the distribution of energy and transport providing permeable city cells.
